Yellow warnings issued for snow and strong winds ahead of Storm Barra

Motorists are being warned that ice, snow and high winds could cause disruption on Scotland's roads.

Police Scotland are also urging caution on roads in Angus and Tayside.

A spokesperson said: “We have two yellow warnings from the Met Office for potentially hazardous weather affecting the Tayside area – one for high winds in Angus and Dundee in effect 9am to midnight today, and another for snow affecting highland Perthshire and Angus from 11am to midnight.

"These two combined could be quite problematic, so please take appropriate care and precautions should you need to travel in the affected areas. We’ve already seen some wintry weather over the past couple of days in our loftier altitudes, so be prepared for some disruption.”The Met Office have issued three Yellow warnings covering Scotland for Tuesday 7th December. Strong winds and snow are forecast in some areas which could impact on driving conditions and cause some disruption to travel and power.

Transport Scotland, utility companies and local resilience partners have contingency plans in place in preparation for any disruption, and will continue to share up to date advice and information with the public.

A ministerial meeting of the Scottish Government’s Resilience Room (SGoRR), chaired by Deputy First Minister John Swinney, was held earlier yesterday to ensure preparations and appropriate measures are in place.

Mr Swinney said: “In preparation for Storm Barra, I met resilience partners to oversee efforts and ensure every possible resource is deployed and continues to stand by to co-ordinate support.

“The Scottish Government is in close contact with local authorities and the emergency services to ensure people in the affected areas receive the latest information and support where needed. I would urge everyone in the affected areas to exercise caution and follow the latest travel advice.

“I want to assure the public that we have strong and robust arrangements in place to manage and address weather-related resilience issues at a national, regional and local level. In the aftermath of Storm Arwen, we will review the preparations and response to ensure we learn from this most exceptional storm.”
