Praise for work of Forfar furniture project

Dave Doogan visited the Angus Upcycling Project in Forfar, a volunteer-led organisation, which encourages people donate unwanted furniture to them instead of just throwing it away.

The project’s team then restores and refreshes these items, and give them to families and individuals in need, or sells them to cover their organisational costs.

The group recently donated over 200 Christmas hamper bags, in partnership with various local businesses, which the organisation says fed more than 500 people at Christmas.

As well as its furniture supplies, Angus Upcycling Project also provides a range of other services and has also recently opened a clothing bank, recognising that many in need this winter period will be without suitably warm clothing.

It also provides hands-on experience for disengaged young people, provides work experience for the unemployed and provides cooking lessons for those who wish to learn how to cook with limited ingredients and on a limited budget.

Commenting after the visit, Mr Doogan said that the charity’s work in the community “cannot be underestimated” and that its support continues during what is a challenging time for many.

He said: “The efforts of the volunteers at Angus Upcycling Project are utterly outstanding. I am in awe of the dedication they have towards helping those in need, and ensuring that furniture which could go to a new home is not unnecessarily wasted.

“The social and environmental impact of organisations like Angus Upcycling Project cannot be underestimated. Whether it’s putting on cooking lessons, donating furniture to families, encouraging pupils from local schools to get involved with work placements, or their recent Christmas food bag drive, this team has been there to support people at a critical time, with the cost-of-living spiralling.

“Angus Upcycling Project is an invaluable asset to the community, and I thank the team of volunteers for their efforts each and every day.”
