Memorial set to welcome visitors

The forthcoming Doors Open Days will give Forfarians a rare opportunity to see inside, and enjoy the view from, one of the district’s most prominent landmarks.

The Balmashanner War Memorial will welcome visitors on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11 as part of the initiative, which will see prominent and rarely-opened buildings across the county throw open their doors.

The memorial has stood sentinel on Balmashanner Hill for just over a century. Built in 1920/1921, a plaque above the entrance reads ‘Their name liveth for evermore. Erected in Memory of the men of Forfar and District who fell in the Great War 1914-18’. There is also a Roll of Honour inside.

It was dedicated by Queen Mary on September 11, 1921 and comprises a square tower, with battlements and turret. Its design is similar to that of the Airlie Monument on Tulloch Hill.

The memorial will be open from 11am-3pm on both days and booking is not required.​​​​​​​
