Have a say in next chapter of cathedral's history

Brechin Cathrdral, which has been at the heart of the city for more than 800 years, is facing an uncertain future following its closure by the Church of Scotland in 2021, and a new trust is being formed to safeguard the building.

It is currently being managed by The Society of Friends of Brechin Cathedral which believes that, while its role as a place of worship has ceased, this presents a range of opportunities to develop new ways to use it.

The General Trustees of the Church of Scotland how wish to transfer the cathedral to the society and the trust, formed with funding from the Angus Rural Partnership, will take it over.

While it is thought that the site has been used for religious purposes since the 6th or 7th century, the first recorded reference to a church in Brechin was during the reign of King Kenneth II in the 10th century.

A society spokesperson said: “The trust will be able to apply for funding, employ staff, and operate the cathedral buildings for the benefit of all.

"The General Trustees would like to transfer the cathedral to the Society, and we are seeking input from the community to support our case.”

A questionnaire has now been drawn up, which invites suggestions for how the community would like to see the next chapter in the cathedral’s history unfold .

The deadline for submissions is Saturday, April 15.

The spokesperson continued: “This survey is anonymous with responses, including those on paper, recorded on Microsoft forms. Brechin Cathedral is a beautiful and historic building of great significance.

“ This is your chance to have your say and share in this exciting future.

The questionnaire can be filled in online at https://forms.office.com/r/rAiQLPHP9n while paper copies can be picked up and completed forms dropped off at the following locations: Brechin Library,BrechinCommunity Campus, Brymers, 1st Stop 2 Shop and Brechin Garden Centre.
