The Scottish Government introduced the Baby Boxes scheme in 2017, entitling every new-born in Scotland to a box containing essential items.

It is intended to ensure that every child has the best possible start in life.

With updated clothing designs, the refreshed baby box also now includes a baby toothbrush to promote oral health from the very beginning of a baby’s life.

Based on the latest figures for number of Baby Boxes given out by health boards, 235,622 boxes have been distributed to parents across Scotland since the start of the project.

Commenting, Mr Dey said: “I am delighted with the latest version of Scotland’s much cherished Baby Box, with the addition of a toothbrush hopefully encouraging good dental health from the earliest years.

“This scheme will be more valuable than ever for many new parents in Angus and across Scotland struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, and it is very encouraging that so many of the new boxes have already been delivered in Tayside.

“The arrival of a new baby is a wonderful moment but, of course, every new parent will appreciate the significant costs of welcoming a new addition to the family.

“The baby box is just one of many transformative actions this Scottish Government is taking, with the limited powers at its disposal, to make a real difference in the lives of children and families on low incomes – like the game changing Scottish Child payment, which will soon rise to £25 per week per child.”

Scotland's Baby Box is a safe and comfortable place for your baby to sleep and gives you some of the essentials for the early months of a new baby's life.

It includes things like: a mattress, fitted sheet and blanket that fit the box perfectly; a selection of clothes from newborn up to the age of 6 months; a bath towel, a travel changing mat, muslin cloth squares and a bib; books, so you can start sharing stories together before your baby is born and a digital underarm thermometer.
